Best high schools in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town

School access is one of the strongest drivers of property demand in Cape Town's Southern Suburbs. Families build their entire search around catchment areas, and the competition to live near the right school pushes up prices in specific pockets year after year. Here is what you need to know about the top high schools in the area and where they sit on the map.

Rondebosch and Newlands: the densest cluster

This stretch of the Southern Suburbs has the highest concentration of top-rated public high schools in Cape Town.

Westerford High School (Rosebank) is consistently one of the best-performing public schools in the Western Cape. A co-ed school with a 100% pass rate and a class average well above 79%, it draws families specifically to the Rosebank, Mowbray, and Newlands areas. Proximity to Westerford carries real weight when sellers market a home.

Rondebosch Boys' High School (Rondebosch) has been around since 1897. It is academically strong, has deep sporting traditions, and is one of the most sought-after public boys' schools in the country. Buyers targeting this school typically look in Rondebosch, Claremont, and lower Newlands.

Rustenburg Girls' High School (Rondebosch) sits just minutes from Rondebosch Boys'. Founded in 1894, it is the leading public girls' high school in the Southern Suburbs and pulls families into Rondebosch, Claremont, and Kenilworth.

Claremont and Wynberg: a strong mid-belt option

Herschel Girls School (Claremont) is a semi-private school widely regarded as one of the top girls' schools in South Africa. It draws from across the Southern Suburbs and into the northern suburbs, but families wanting to be close tend to settle in Claremont, Kenilworth, or Wynberg Upper.

Wynberg Boys' High School (Wynberg) is another historic institution with strong academics and excellent sports programmes. Families targeting Wynberg Boys' often look at Wynberg, Plumstead, and Lansdowne, which gives more affordable entry points without sacrificing school access.

Bergvliet and Diep River: the best option in the south

Bergvliet High School (Bergvliet) has been producing top achievers since 1957. It is the standout public co-ed high school for the southern end of the Southern Suburbs and makes Bergvliet, Meadowridge, Diep River, and Heathfield very attractive to school-driven buyers. Private school options

SACS (South African College School, near Gardens) is technically just outside the Southern Suburbs but serves many families based here. Founded in 1829, it is one of the oldest schools in the country and attracts buyers across a wide geography.

Reddam House Constantia sits in the Constantia Valley and is the go-to private school option for families at the wealthier end of the Southern Suburbs. Fees are significant, but it takes the pressure off catchment-area proximity.

If school access is a non-negotiable, build your search around the school first and work backwards to the suburb. Properties within easy walking or cycling distance of Westerford, Rondebosch Boys', or Rustenburg tend to hold their value well precisely because that demand never disappears.
